I have been painting in oils for 42 years. My first oil painting won best of show at my school. I was in ninth grade. Since that time I have explored every subject matter a painter could use to make a good composition. A large body of work completed in those years includes landscapes, figures, still life, florals and wildlife.
The method I use is based on the traditional painters of Europe taught to me by the masters I studied under many years ago. The paint is applied thinly at first in a traditional underpainting, which then glows through the finished work. The color I use at that stage varies depending on the mood of light I wish to create. Then thin applications of transparent oil colors are applied using linseed oil which gives another level of luminosity to the painting. The finished product has a smooth finish which enhances the value of the painting. After waiting for the piece to dry properly, it is then varnished with Daniar varnish, which has been made to replicate the intricate varnishes of the old European masters. It gives the finished work a glow that becomes more beautiful overtime and protects the work from environmental hazards such as light, heat, and pollution. My paintings will hold up without any cracking, if cared for properly, for many generations to enjoy.
The surface I most often choose to paint on is either "panel" which is Masonite treated with 5 or 6 coats of base paint and then sanded to a smooth as glass finish; the other surface of choice is linen which is custom coated first and then either stretched on bars or applied to panels. Both of these surfaces really show the thin transparencies of color I use beautifully and take quite a skill level to paint since they show overworking or muddiness of color immediately.
The oil paints I use are the best that are available today. I like pure colors, both transparent hues, cadmium's, and a few opaques. My palette is actually quite limited to the purest colors that hold their intrinsic value when mixing. I buy certain colors from different companies that are exactly what I'm looking for. I do all of my own mixing of color so that each painting is totally unique. The similarity of light and color between certain works happens because of a certain location and time of day and are usually part of a series.
I consider myself a multifaceted painter and love doing commissioned work. Having traveled extensively throughout my life, I have been fortunate to study the light and color in many places in the world. I pride myself to have different bodies of work placed in various galleries that are specifically done just for them. My work is in private collections throughout the world and many notable Aspen residents have works that were done over the 22 years that I lived there, including many commissioned paintings. |
